Taking It All In, on the surface, appears to simply be a great exercise and breathing technique. After working this piece with the Junior High Concert Band at the WTAMU Band Camp, the students and I learned that it is so much more. Not only does this great piece teach breathing technique, it also works starts and stops of notes, the sustain of notes, releasing without motion, dynamics, and shaping of phrases. This piece gave the students an opportunity to work on musical details no matter their level of ability. They were able to be EXPRESSIVE within a note range that allowed all of their focus to be one the details around the notes. They were shocked at how much they were able to add, musically, to the piece each time they played it. Even more, they realized links with other pieces they were playing. I will definitely be adding this as a staple in my teaching of young players. –Annette Mitchell, director of the band that premiered Taking It All In
