To ensure successful collaboration and achievement of desired outcomes, it is essential to establish clear goals and define roles for team members. Clearly defining goals and objectives is the foundation for effective teamwork in music education. Project-based goals provide a sense of direction and purpose for the team members. For instance, a team may set a goal to enhance student rigor by incorporating sectionals and individual pass-offs. By clearly defining these objectives, team members can align their efforts and work towards achieving this goal collectively. Additionally, setting a specific target, such as increasing student mastery on a set skill by 20% within a semester, provides a measurable outcome that keeps the team focused and motivated.
For the top ensemble, we use the All-Region process as a project-based goal to strengthen musicality and technique. This is assessed during sectionals, pass-offs, individual listenings then through the actual auditions. Daily Drill exercises and scales are the focus in the other two ensembles which are assessed in the same way plus Canvas video submissions for similar reasons.
Assigning specific roles and responsibilities to team members is crucial for efficient teamwork. Each team member should have a clearly defined role that aligns with their expertise and strengths. For example, one team member may be responsible for developing brass pedagogy, while another may focus on organizing performances or managing equipment. Clearly defined roles ensure that team members have a sense of ownership and accountability for their assigned tasks. This clarity avoids duplication of efforts and promotes specialization, allowing team members to utilize their skills effectively. The team is more likely to take pride in their individual tasks which creates a positive learning environment and starts building a band hall family. It also establishes mutual respect and mutual trust. Completing a personality type assessment as a team may help better understand everyone’s strengths and weaknesses. Your students will definitely reap the benefits of this more productive and genuine atmosphere.
Breaking down a project such as a fundraiser into smaller tasks and delegating them to team members is an effective strategy for achieving goals efficiently. By dividing the project into research the best fundraiser, coordinating the kick-off, and communication to parents and students, team members can focus on their assigned areas and work towards achieving the overall project goal. Task delegation also ensures that the workload is distributed evenly, preventing burnout and maximizing productivity. Regular check-ins and collaboration within the team help ensure that each task is progressing as planned and provide opportunities for feedback and support. Sometimes as a head director, you may assign tasks to your team that require them to take the lead and you assist them. It really does take a village!
Establishing clear deadlines for each task or milestone is essential for keeping the team focused and ensuring timely completion of the assigned duties. Deadlines create a sense of urgency and motivate team members to prioritize their work. For instance, setting a deadline for the completion of the beginner instrument drive within four weeks ensures that the project progresses smoothly. Moreover, deadlines enable effective project management and allow for adjustments in case of unexpected delays or challenges. Regularly reviewing and updating deadlines based on the project’s progress helps the team stay on track and maintain momentum toward achieving the established goals. Checking in with your coworkers allows more comfort with asking questions and providing a high-quality result or product.
Maintaining open and ongoing communication about goals and progress is vital for successful teamwork. Regular team meetings, progress updates, and status reports provide opportunities for team members to share ideas, address challenges, and align their efforts. Effective communication ensures that everyone is aware of their roles, understands the project’s objectives, and is on the same page regarding timelines and expectations. Furthermore, it fosters collaboration and encourages the exchange of knowledge and expertise among team members. Clear and consistent communication channels, such as email, video conferences, or collaboration platforms, facilitate easy information sharing and enhance team cohesion. Communication has many forms, so make sure to communicate daily as often as possible. Keeping open lines of communication develops transparency and honesty which aids in avoiding discrepancies and conflicts.

Dr. Darwert Johnson – Dr. Johnson’s is in his 25th year in education. He is currently in his 14th year in Mansfield ISD most recently serving as the Director of Fine Arts and previously a campus administrator, and director of bands at the middle and high school level. Dr. Johnson spent eleven years in the classroom teaching grades 6 – 12 and 14 as a campus principal and/or assistant principal. His bands were consistent sweepstakes recipients, Middle School Area Honor Band finalist, Marching Area Contest Finalist, and Mark of Excellence Finalist. He is a member of TMAA, TASA, TMEA, TBA, and UIL Region 5 Executive Committee. He holds his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Tarleton State University.
Luzviminda S. Pascasio is in her twenty-fourth year of teaching but her fourth year as Head Band Director at Danny Jones Middle School and Mary Lillard Intermediate in Mansfield ISD. In MISD, she serves as the DJMS Fine Arts Department Chair and is a KEEPS Mentor. Ms. Pascasio also serves as the Region 5 MS/JH Band Coordinator. Throughout her career, Ms. Pascasio has been selected as a Secondary Teacher of the Year, Campus Teacher of the Year, and a Music & Arts Educator of the Year Finalist. She enjoys playing clarinet in the Mansfield Wind Symphony and values being an active mentor, clinician, and judge. Ms. Pascasio’s professional affiliations include WBDI where she serves as Vice President, PBM, TMAA, TMEA, and TBA.
