If only I had the time

7 Sep
music during pandemic

If only I had the time I’d teach more ______________.

How many times have you thought this?

Well, now many of us DO have the time.
Competitions are cancelled. Concerts are uncertain. Deadlines are gone.
Would we have chosen this? No.
But we have it.

If you receive our weekly newsletters, you know that our word of the year is PERSIST.
So let’s PERSIST in teaching kids to love music – all aspects of music.

Here are 10 things you may have thought “If only I had the time I’d teach more ___________.” I’m sure you can think of additions. Many more.

  • Improvisation
  • Composition
  • Music theory
  • Listening to professional performers
  • Extension lessons based on our band literature
  • Chamber ensembles
  • Conducting
  • World music
  • Music history
  • Rhythm activities

Make it fun. Use student leaders. Let kids explore.
Find contentment in what you can gain, not what you’ve lost.
Embrace all aspects of music education during this time.

Kids are smart.
Kids are resilient.
Kids are creative.
Kids are curious.

PERSIST in teaching KIDS.
PERSIST in teaching MUSIC.
This time may not be what we asked for, but it’s what we’ve got.

And if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s taught us that time with our students is precious.

Make every moment count.
