The Major Reason Why Branson Missouri Is A Destination For Student Bands

19 Mar

Branson, Missouri doesn’t have tropical beaches. It doesn’t have breathtaking skyscrapers and it’s not home to a beloved cartoon mouse.

Then why do student bands flock to this humble midwest destination every year? How is Branson, Missouri ever mentioned in the same breath as America’s most popular cities as a place to take student bands?

Here’s one major reason: unique performance opportunities you can’t get anywhere else.

Sure, Branson has a lot of other things going for it too, but it has mostly differentiated itself as a destination with one-of-a-kind music performance opportunities thanks to a program known as Branson On Stage Live.

Branson is home to over 100 live theater shows. Branson On Stage Live was founded on the idea that each of those shows could use opening acts…and who better to provide them than the student bands of America? But this concept wasn’t cooked up in a boardroom by some corporate interest. Instead, it’s the brainchild of Greg Hoffman, a man who believes dreams of making it as a professional musician can come true, because they did for him.

“Branson On Stage Live really is a culmination of my life experiences.” Hoffman explained.

In 1993, after a career spanning everything from playing in the U.S. military band, to becoming a music educator, to dabbling in group travel, Hoffman found himself living in Branson and performing as a trumpet player for a show headlined by Tony Orlando. Like many others in Branson at the time, his show was known for drawing long lines of motor coaches filled with senior citizens.

“One day before a show I said ‘Hey Tony I got a great idea!’ That’s when I shared that I wanted to bring student performance groups to be the opening act.” Hoffman said.

After some convincing, Orlando agreed and Branson On Stage Live was born. In 1994 they had their first student group perform as their opening act, but it was still an uphill battle convincing anyone in the student travel business that Branson was a town worth visiting. So for the next decade, Hoffman focused on courting an audience he was much more familiar with: band directors.

“I knew I needed to get directors to come. I told them ‘You can go to festivals. You can perform at events. But you’re never gonna have an experience like you do in Branson becoming the opening act to a star.’ Boy, their eyes lit up!” Hoffman said.

One at a time, Hoffman convinced directors to participate, until word-of-mouth kicked in. From there, Branson On Stage Live started to grow rapidly. Soon after, tour operators started building itineraries specifically for Branson and against all odds, the shift was in full effect: Branson was becoming a bonafide destination for student performance groups.

Branson On Stage Live has since helped a staggering number of students achieve professional live performance experience and is a massive reason why Branson is on the map as a destination for student bands. Hoffman’s impact on the city is easy to see, but the impact he’s had on the students who’ve participated in his program is harder to quantify.

“Going through a professional showcase can change a student’s life.” Hoffman said. “There’s a lot of opportunities out there that they may never realize exist until they step into that theater and become a professional for an evening.”

Branson, Missouri will never have the name recognition of America’s most popular cities. However, because of Greg Hoffman and Branson On Stage Live, Branson has a spirit of encouragement that musical dreams can come true with great performance opportunities. That spirit, and those performance opportunities are why student bands go to Branson each year because the truth is: there’s nowhere else in the country quite like it.
