Have your ever played Scoot with your band classes? We love it because there is little to no prep involved and the game works for all class sizes! It’s also a fun way to review music concepts since kids get to move around a bit.
Step by step instructions on how to play:
- Have students sit in their regular chair (you can also use music stands and no chairs if you choose) Distribute flash cards so that each student has a card or two at their chair (or music stand). It is helpful if these are numbered, but not totally necessary.
- You can even use a set of posters sets like this music symbols word wall set if you don’t have flash cards. Or if you want the EXACT SET OF QUIZ CARDS pictured below, you can view them HERE.
- Give each student an answer sheet (or, they can even use a blank sheet of paper to keep it simple.
- Students begin answering the card that is on their own stand. After an appropriate amount of time (maybe 1-2 minutes) the teacher says “SCOOT!” All of the students move to the next chair, where a new card awaits them. Continue until every student has completed every card (or until you run out of time).
You can play Scott with any flashcard or poster sets. With index cards and sharpies, you can quickly make a set to play immediately. If you are interested in some pre-made sets of flashcards to use for Scoot, we recommend our music theory task card sets. A bonus is that each set comes with slides too if you’d like to use a digital version!
