Band Directors Talk Shop

Body Staff / Hand Staff to introduce Note Names

28 Dec

Here are 2 great ways to introduce students to the names of lines and spaces!

Body Staff

Students touch their toes and say “E” for treble clef or “G” for bass clef.
Students touch their knees and say “G” for treble clef or “B” for bass clef.
Students touch their hips and say “B” or “D.”
Students touch their shoulders and say “D” or “F.”
Students reach toward the sky and say “F” or “A.”
Students touch their shins and say “F” for treble clef or “A” for bass clef.
Students touch their thighs and say “A” or “C.”
Students touch their stomach and say “C” or “E.”
Students touch their head and say “E” or “G.”
Start very slowly and increase speed as students gain confidence.

Hand Staff

Students raise their hand in front of their face with their PINKY on the BOTTOM and thumb on top.
Students touch their pinky (bottom) and say “E” for treble clef or “G” for bass clef.
Students touch their ring finger and say “G” for treble clef or “B” for bass clef.
Students touch their middle finger and say “B” or “D.”
Students touch their index finger and say “D” or “F.”
Students touch their thumb and say “F” or “A.”
Students touch between the pinky/index fingers (the space) and say “F” for treble clef or “A” for bass clef.
Students touch between the index/middle fingers and say “A” or “C.”
Students touch between the middle/index fingers their stomach and say “C” or “E.”
Students touch between the index finger/thumb and say “E” or “G.”
You can quiz students:
“Touch C”
“Touch F” (some have more than one answer.
You can sort of add ledger lines by showing an extra index finger (from the other hand) above/below the staff.
This is a perfect activity for the first or last minute of class!
